WasteMINZ Conference shows organisations could be managing e-waste better.
Wayne Grieve of Croxley Recycling was part of the 30th annual WasteMINZ Conference in Christchurch in November, launching the new OfficeMax TechCollect initiative with ANZRP (link to article) and promoting sound processes and pathways for recycling e-waste in New Zealand through Croxley Recycling.

Cyclone Gita
In February 2018, Tonga was impacted by a major tropical cyclone which damaged or destroyed thousands of buildings, caused major evacuations and left 80% of Tongan homes without power.
Amongst those effected have been Tonga’s schoolchildren. In May 2018, it was reported that 29 schools will have to be rebuilt, and that 10 schools (or 1,189 students) were still using tents as temporary classrooms.

Free To Learn
It’s a surprising fact that the top universities in the world actively recruit home-schooled students for their freshman class. The reason they do so is because these students have primarily been free to study what interests them most, and have “learned how to learn” while doing so. (Business Insider, Chris Weller, 2015) While standardised tests are too often the criteria upon which education outcomes are measured, acceptance into top post-secondary institutions is another good way to measure student outcomes for secondary schools. This criterion is an accurate gauge about the effectiveness of schooling. It goes beyond celebrating test-taking skills by also demonstrating the real-world value of student-directed learning.
